Clearing your Energy through your Senses: Taste
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of all the senses, our brains are capable of processing the least amount of information through the sense of taste.
This makes beautiful design sense; by the time something gets to our mouths, it has already been processed by each of the other senses.
And by the same token, no other sense causes as extreme visceral reactions as taste. Anyone who has had a sip of spoiled milk knows what immediately happens.
Our sense of taste is the last line of defense before things are allowed into our bodies. So despite our limited ability to process taste information, that information has the ability to strongly move our bodies and our energy.
To understand how tastes affect our energy, we’re going to refer back again to 5 phase/element theory. Scientists have identified 5 basic tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, and umami, with the last being added only very recently within the last 20 years.
In Five Flavor theory, however, the fifth taste is described as pungent/acrid. More commonly associated with spicy flavors.
Each of the five basic flavors corresponds to one of the elements:
Element |
Taste |
Wood |
Sour |
Fire |
Bitter |
Earth |
Sweet |
Metal |
Acrid/Pungent (Spicy) |
Water |
Salty |
For clear and balanced energy, we need a balance of the elements, and therefore a diet with a balance of flavors.
From a nutritional standpoint, this ensures we get all the nutrients we need – tastes are indicators of chemistry. And we are capable of detecting certain chemicals for a reason; either because they are essential for us or they are harmful for us.
From an energetic standpoint, it ensures we get all the elemental energies we need for health and clear energy flow.
The most commonly over indulged flavor is sweet. Over indulgence creates an Earth Element energy dominance. It brings us closer to earth, making us heavier and our physical, Earth Element bodies larger.
The most commonly avoided flavor is bitter, followed by sour. We usually only get it in coffee, tea, or chocolate. But it is usually so laden with sugar that the effect of the bitter is far overpowered by sweet.
This explains why most Chinese medicine herbal concoctions are bitter. Even most pharmaceuticals are bitter. If you’ve ever taken a non-sugar coated pill and placed it on your tongue you get a healthy dose of bitter taste.
To clear your energy through taste, make sure you get some bitter flavors into your diet.
Here are some great foods that you can add:
Arugula
Bitter Melon
Dandelion Greens
Dill
Jerusalem Artichoke
Kale
Saffron
Sesame Seed
Turmeric
Notice that, coupled with some sour (lemon, vinegar, etc), we have many of the ingredients for a good Green Drink or a cleanse. There’s a reason why these practices can be very detoxifying and clarifying for your energy!
A short Green Drink fast or a cleanse can do wonders for clearing not only your body, but your energy as well.
Enjoy these new flavors in your diet!
